This has been driving me crazy for years, but after today’s episode, it got really stupid.

Why do the props people have the women carrying these huge purses when it is so obvious there is absolutely NOTHING in them? I had to laugh when Hope started rummaging around in her bag for the sleeping pill, dumped it upside down and nothing but a cosmetics case fell out.

    It’s petty, I know, but why…..?

is a nuclear winter (God forbid) – women can survive with the contents of their purses…I know my back hurts most days lugging mine around…I have:

a small Bible, a brush, a comb, assorted makeup in bag – (at least six items), asprin, gasex (heh – I’m old and I like Wendy’s chili), Tums, check book, wallet (no money – just pictures and other essential cards for health care and such), Germex handwash, hand cream, keys – I have no idea where they go, a small plastic bag of dog cookies (in case I have to lure a stray off the highway or street for safety sake), coupons for the grocery store (that I always forget to use), six packages of assorted gum – some of those have been in the purse for about six months, tooth brush and holder, small tube of tooth paste, floss, eye drops, extra pair of eye glasses and sun glasses, a full plastic water bottle, small plastic bag of cookies for me (well, they are mostly crumbs now), about $10 of change that always ends up in the bottom of the purse no matter how much I try to keep it in the coin purse,  a coin purse with about 3 cents in it, small box of strike anywhere matches (no, I have never smoked why I started carrying them I don’t remember – last camping trip? maybe), a laminated emergency card with my doctor’s and my vet’s information, a small address/phone book, a copy of my last will (I live in California – ya never know), and oh yeah – a .38 sp. (I live in California – ya never know)…

I carry very little in mine.  The only cosmetic I have is lipstick.  I have a tiny  bottle of aspirin, wallet, DayTimer, nail file, comb, protein bar, phone (a heavy one, a Jitterbug because I also am old!) and Kleenex.  I leave my keys in my car while I’m at home so the only time they’re in there is when I’m out somewhere.

I use to carry a bunch of make-up but when I found I never used it I finally took it out.  I guess the stray dogs will have to attack me although I feel I’ve learned enough from Cesar Millan to ‘talk them down.’

But I do have emergency supplies in my car.  I have a kit I got for Christmas once from my ex (DH #1) that has everything you’d need in an emergency while out in your car.  I have water, tools, first aid kit, rope, flares, folding shovel, more protein bars, umbrella (I live in Florida where the sun can be deadly plus it rains almost every day in the summer), beach towel, and a bag of shop rags.  And in all the years I’ve been carrying it aound, I’ve never used a thing.  But watch what would happen if I took any of them out.

I guess this should have gone on the Pub forum, huh?  Jenn, you want to move it?  I can’t help but say how I love how we can get off on these tangents so frequently.  But look what you learn about the others ‘girls’ here.

I’m in the minority right along with you.  I hate carrying a purse so I usually have a Big Skinny wallet in the front pocket of my jeans or shorts.  On the rare occassion I carry a purse it’s got

    • Comb
    • Lip balm
    • small pill bottle with ibuprofen, lortabs & if needed my diabetes meds (only if I’m going out for dinner)
    • wallet
    • keys
    • kleenix
    • Once in a while I’ll throw my camera in there

I don’t like carrying a purse, but with young kids, I have to.  Let’s see on any given day, my purse has: wallet, phone, assorted pens, a few pencils, various recipts, my name tag from work, a small bottle of hand sanitizer, a couple of kids fruit snack, several hair bands, lolipops, and what ever trash the 7 year old might have put in there since she does not want to hold it until she finds the trash can.

Do you think the characters carrying giant purses goes back to when the are trying to hide a pregnancy not being written into the storyline, you know: pregnancy over, now what do we do with it type of thing?

the big purses – you are probably right, they have to get their money’s worth…or else it’s the fashion and they are trying to keep up with the latest and greatest…I carry a lot in my purse but my purse isn’t that big.

smashing silver purses lately.  I have one (silver) and everytime I use it people complement me on it.  I call it my resort bag.  Heck, in Florida or California you can get away with that stuff for everyday wear.

But the purse that ALWAYS gets comments is one that I made.  It is black fabric with appliqued pink and green flip-flops on it and a HUGE pink feather boa around the top (real feathers, not maribou).  I saw one in a store once and it was selling for $75.  I decided I could make one for much less (actually came to about $18).  I made another ‘evening’ one out of silver lamé and white feathers. Since then, I’ve made about 10 for various friends and relatives.  DIL wanted one that was gold (not metalic, gold-colored) fabric with black silhouette (sp?) African animals and black boa.  Really cool!  In fact, I just finished one now.  It’s black with big red Chinese characters and small gold coins printed on the fabric and a red boa.  It’s really neat if I do say so myself…and I just did!  My next one is a black background Hawaiian print with pink, aqua, and orange hibiscus with green and white leaves and a white boa.  I wish I could post pictures here so you could see them.

But, they would only hide a pregnancy ’til the second trimester…not quite big enough for the whole 9 months.

When it becomes a business it ceases to be fun.  All I need is to sell enough to keep me going so I can do more.

I only carry a purse to formal affairs which is very rare. I have my credit cards, driver’s license, medical cards, small reading glasses and cell phone in my pockets. When my kids were young, I carried a bag with so much stuff in it that I  tilted to one side.
