In Soap Opera Weekly Susan Seaforth Hayes explained why there’s no singing in Salem like there use to be in the days of Doug’s Place and Blondies.  Cost.  The new copywright laws made what was a $200 tune to play is now $15,000-$20,000.  Bill Hayes went on to say this has priced itself out of their immediate ability to use many songs.  Days wanted to do "Always" during Alice’s funeral.  They could use it but one chorus was $15,000 and the show doesn’t have a budget for that.  But there may be music during the holiday season.  Bill went on to say "If we’re going to sing, we have to use something that’s in the public domain like Christmas carols that were written 200 years ago."

I for one would love to hear Bill Hayes sing "O Holy Night" or "We Three Kings".  He is really good.

can’t even sing anymore.  I think everyone deserves to be paid for the fruits of their labor, but if they are singing old tunes (and heck, the Beatles are old), what is the harm?

it is no longer politically correct to sing Christmas carols in public.  Heck, the kids can’t even sing them in school anymore.  What a sad sign of our times that all these classic beautiful tunes can no longer be celebrated for all to hear.

I’m sure if Bill sang something with any religious conotation whatsoever, someone will call in and complain.  Bah humbug!!!!

In my opinion, if someone doesn’t want to hear Christmas Carols or any reference to the true meaning of Christmas then they shouldn’t be watching the Christmas episodes anyway.

Agreed! I love the song, "We Three Kings"! I have had some of the little children at my church march in during a Christmas play, to that song! Awesome!
