So do Sami’s kids have to go to school all summer? Lame excuse Sami and Lucas alone time.

These shows are supposed to be in real time/dates.  The kids would be out of school by now.

out this week if they had a lot of snow days.  We didn’t here so they got out much earlier than normal.  Some schools around the US also have extended programs where they go almost year round with a month vacation in the summer.

I used to teach in Florida and we had year round school. But that was in 1989. Most schools have realized that students don’t retain info on that schedule. I live in Va now. We miss A LOT for snow. Usually our schools are out by the second week of June (no matter the amt of days missed) because colleges want the info on the graduating seniors. Just seemed like a lame excuse for where the kids are. Couldn’t they have been on a picnic with someone? or going to the pool? or the lake? or a mini vacation? Or something that kids do in the summer??? Just bugged me I suppose, I’m having one of those days…

have a type of summer school for kids of working parents, or whoever wants to attend.  It’s not particularily an academic ciriculium but more like the daily vacation bible school we used to go to…only not religious, just fun stuff mostly. Lots of crafts, sports, and stuff like that.

absent from the screen…then how do they explain all the other times the children have been "banished" for months on end?  And not just Sami’s children either…the kids on these shows are always (90% of the time) upstairs at the pub, Switzerland ski trips, seeing grandma’s, etc.

got out this year on June 8th, with half days the last three days of school.  We have tons of snow in Maryland, but this year there was not much snow at all, thus the unused snow days were credited with an earlier "last day of school."  But, even if lots of snow days were used, and maybe every county’s jurisdiction might be different, but I cannot ever remember them keeping schools open beyond the 3rd week of June, let alone the 4th week.  Just sayin’, that’s why it was lame.  I don’t remember hearing that Sami’s kids were involved any special school or project that would keep them in school.  It was just another example of stupid writing, IMO.

for explaining the kids away.  They are not accomplished actors and I don’t expect to see them all the time.  I guess it would be in the same catagory of seeing people at work.  Except for Madison and Roman, we hardly ever see them at the "office."

Besides, unless there is a specific storyline based around one of the kids, like Johnny’s eye cancer, I don’t care to see them all the time.

some Massachusetts schools were getting out the last week of June and can go up to June 30th.  The new year begins on July 1st so all days must be made up before then by either extended day hours, Saturdays, or losing vacations.

I just drove by the elementary school in my area this afternoon and they have a big sign outside that announces special dates.  The message on the board today was:

    Last day of school–June 28!!

so I guess it depends on where you live.  SW mentioned that Mass. kids go back in July.  Here, our kids last day was June 8th, but only because they didn’t use anywhere near their allotted "snow days".  I think they were originally scheduled to close the second week in June, and their opening day back for the 2012/2013 year is August 27th.  So, it’s definitely where you are on the map.  Guess Salem, U.S.A. is in or near your state’s school district.  LOL!

Labor Day in Massachusetts.  The teachers’ contracts end on June 30th and the new year begins in city government on July 1st for us.  Teacher’s receive their final check on June 30th and don’t get paid until usually the second week of classes in September.    Teacher’s are contracted for 183 days or no later than June 30th but the final check includes all of the money that was withheld during the year so it appears like you are getting paid for the summer but you aren’t. If you take an unpaid day during the school year, you don’t lose 1/10 of a 2 week check, you lose 1/183 of your salary (a lot more than 1/10 of one week’s).  So you could have to work up until June 30th but not after it.  If that makes sense?

There is a summer program for kids with special needs or at the HS level if they have failed classes which starts right after the 4th of July.  There are some schools like one in Salem, MA that go what they call year round.  They go to school through July and then get August off.  They also get some other vacations of about a week I believe.

I don’t care if they have screen time either. They usually are mediocre actors at best.

But I do care about the dialogue/storyline relating to where the kids are at the time. Lucas expressing his admiration for Sami’s ability to "get up and get the kids ready for school" seemed out of place and time to me. Just expressing my opinion. I taught school for 24 years–and only when I taught at a year-round school did I work past the second week of June.

Since Sami is a single mom and working, it would be logical they they were at camp, either day camp or sleep a way. It would sound more believable than school, unless it is an activites school program for working families.
