I mentioned watching the eagle nest in VA with the three chicks.  I just found out that the female eagle was struck by a plane and killed.  (The nest is in a botanical garden right next to the airport.)  The babies haven’t learned to eat on their own yet, nor can they fly yet.  They don’t know if the male will continue to feed and care for them.

I can’t believe how badly I feel about this, I actually cried over it.  It’s strange how attatched I got to them.  It is just so sad.

and yes, if I were watching I’d get attached too. But remember in the wild only 20% live past their first year.

Caretakers took the eaglets from the nest and are hand raising them. They did not think the male could provide everything they needed. I feel the worst for him. He has to wonder where they all went!

I’ve been keeping up with the whole thing.  They were taken to the Virginia Wildlife Center (some of you may remember when they had an Animal Planet show titled Wildlife Emergency) and are getting the royal treatment.  In fact, I’m reading a live blog right now (he types very slowly so I’m going back and forth) from the director of the center, answering questions.  I feel like I’ve become an expert on anything eagle.  Go ahead, just ask me something.  :o)
