Any advice on how to get cigarette smoke out of a house? The people that owned it before us mustve been chain smokers! I spent 3 hours the other night shampooing, then we had a guy come professionally do it, no good, and we painted and washed all the walls, tonight we opened the windows and tried to air it out some. We dont close on it until tuesday, but we had to get a crap load of stuff dont in a couple days for the inspection!

In closets, you can fill them with newspapers for a couple days, loosely crumpled, and you may have to do it more than once.  The carpet, you will probably never get rid of the smell, I am sorry to say.  If you can hang cedar ‘sachets’ throughout the rooms for a while, and refresh them as needed.  That is all I can think of.  Go to Heloise.com and see what she advises.  Hope this helps.

but you could try Fabreeze on the carpet and the drapes.  Good luck.

    Nora,

I feel for you – you have done just about all the right things.  I went on line, (as you probably already did), but these have some good advice.  Good luck!

I’ve always heard that vinegar is your best bet.  But you have to clean as much as you can first, i.e. shampoo carpets, clean drapes, etc.  Then use the vinegar.

AFAIC, I don’t think there’s anything that smells worse than Febreze.  Ewwww, I can’t stand the smell of that stuff.  Same with Lysol…it makes me gag.

Now, can someone help me with a dead mouse smell?  I had one d (beneath where it was).  Unfortunately, it’s right where my computer is.  It isn’t strong but I can still get a whiff of it every once in a while.  My pest control guy even removed the "body."
