HELP!  I’ve been making cookies from the Nestles Tollhouse cookie recipe for 40 years but the last two times I made them, they spread out and ran together instead of baking like they should.  I’ve rechecked my ingredients about 10 times and can’t figure out what’s wrong.  I thought maybe my oven temperature was off but the thermometer was only a few degrees too high.

Anybody have any suggestions?  These are my favorite cookies and I don’t want this to happen again.  (Although they still taste good…I put them in the freezer and that makes them even better!!!)  I was making them for a neighbor who just lost her mother but didn’t want to give them to her looking like they did so made something else.

I know sometimes the difference (margarine/oil impacts too).  One other thing: humidity level in the house might be affecting it.

I fell asleep reading today (which I do often) and it came to me in a dream.  I used baking SODA instead of baking POWDER.  Can’t believe it did it twice though.  Good Lord, I hate getting old.

PS:  I ALWAYS use butter, I’m a Wisconsin girl.  My husband used to say I’d eat s*** if I could butter on it.  Hmmm…  Actually, I used to use shortening but I don’t buy it anymore because, living alone, I don’t use enough of it and it gets rancid.  Plus, the trans-fats, ya know.  If I’m going to have clogged arteries, I rather clog them with butter.  :o)

I understand completely. Baking and cooking used to be so easy wayback when I worked full-time and had kids under my feet! Today I find myself following my mother’s wisdom…gather together all the ingredients, double-check, then start putting it all together.

P.S. Butter is the only way to go!
