Chad's age

To be honest I have sort of lost track of the ages of the young people but wasn't Chad just supposed to have graduated high school and be starting his first yet of college? Yet his birth certificate stated the date of birth was 1990. Now my son was born in 1989 and he is going into his senior year at University of Maryland. So are they skipping around to age this kids a bit or did I see it wrong?
